EV battery testing hits the headlines – but it’s not new to All In Vehicle Inspections
South Australia’s first AVILOO EV battery tester approaches three years of EV battery testing and assessment
Electric vehicle battery health testing has hit the headlines in South Australia this week following RAA's announcement that it is introducing independent EV battery health testing using the AVILOO diagnostic platform.
At All In Vehicle Inspections (AIVI), we're pleased to see EV battery health finally getting this level of attention.
But for us, it isn't new.

AIVI began assessing EV batteries almost three years ago, when we first launched our vehicle inspection service. We initially downloaded and analysed battery data manually before introducing AVILOO testing, becoming the first AVILOO provider in South Australia and one of the first in Australia.
“We're passionate about helping buyers understand the condition of the vehicle they're considering buying — and why should an EV be any different?” said AIVI Founder and Chief Inspector Mark Dibdin.
“When we started, we downloaded the available battery data and analysed it manually. It was time-consuming, and sometimes the information we needed simply wasn't made available by the manufacturer.
“That's why we jumped on AVILOO when it entered the Australian market. It gave us another independent tool to provide customers with meaningful battery information so they could make an informed decision — whether that meant buying the vehicle or avoiding a potential lemon.”
Since then, AIVI has taken AVILOO testing directly to EV owners, dealerships, private sellers and prospective buyers across Adelaide and surrounding areas as part of our independent mobile vehicle inspection service.
Why EV battery health matters
The high-voltage battery is one of the most important — and potentially most expensive — components of an electric vehicle.
Two EVs of the same make, model, age and kilometres can have batteries in different condition depending on factors including charging behaviour, temperature, usage and how the vehicle has been operated.
That's why the estimated range displayed on the dashboard doesn't necessarily tell you the actual health of the battery. In most EVs, battery State of Health isn't displayed anywhere that's readily accessible to the owner.
A State of Health (SoH) assessment provides significantly more useful information about the condition and remaining capacity of the high-voltage battery.
For somebody considering buying a used EV, that information can be particularly important.

What is an AVILOO EV battery test?
The recently announced RAA battery testing service uses the same TÜV-certified AVILOO battery diagnostic platform AIVI has been using for almost two years — and we believe it's one of the best independent EV battery assessment systems currently available.
AVILOO is an independent battery diagnostic system designed specifically to assess electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle batteries.
The test connects to the vehicle's diagnostic system and analyses battery data to produce an independent battery certificate.
Depending on the supported vehicle and test, the resulting information can include battery State of Health, usable battery capacity, estimated range and comparison with similar vehicles.
Most importantly, it gives buyers and owners independent information about something that can otherwise be extremely difficult to assess.
Almost three years of EV battery testing experience
Having the equipment is one part of EV battery testing.
Knowing what the information means in the context of the vehicle is another.
AIVI has been assessing EV batteries for almost three years and working with AVILOO for almost two. Battery assessment forms part of our broader experience inspecting electric and hybrid vehicles.
That distinction becomes important when something doesn't quite add up.
An AVILOO certificate can provide valuable information about the high-voltage battery, but an EV contains far more than a battery. Battery management systems, charging systems, thermal management systems, electric drive units and the vehicle's electronic control systems can all affect its condition and ownership risk.
AIVI has also invested in professional EV and hybrid diagnostic equipment, allowing us to investigate beyond the AVILOO battery health test where appropriate.
“We can check the rest of the vehicle's systems as part of a pre-purchase inspection,” Mark said.
“We invested early in diagnostic equipment that allowed us to assess hybrid battery systems, and we've continued developing that capability as plug-in hybrids and full battery-electric vehicles have become more common.
“AVILOO gives us excellent independent battery information, but we're vehicle inspectors. We're interested in the condition of the whole vehicle, not just one number on a certificate.”
That means our customers aren't simply handed a percentage and sent on their way. We can explain what the result means in the context of the vehicle and identify when something warrants further investigation.

Mobile EV battery testing across Adelaide
AIVI is an independent mobile vehicle inspection business.
Rather than requiring the vehicle to be brought to us, we can perform EV battery testing at the vehicle — whether that's at your home, workplace, dealership or, importantly for a pre-purchase inspection, at the seller's location before you've bought the vehicle.
That's particularly useful when you're considering a used EV. You don't need to purchase the vehicle first just to find out about the condition of one of its most valuable components.
Buying a used EV?
Battery health should form part of the picture — not the whole picture.
“A healthy high-voltage battery doesn't automatically mean you're looking at a good vehicle,” Mark explained.
“EVs still have many of the conventional components that need to be inspected, along with EV-specific systems. We also physically inspect the battery and surrounding areas for signs of damage or other concerns.
“A 95% battery State of Health doesn't make it a 95% good car.”
That's why AIVI can combine EV battery health testing with an independent pre-purchase EV inspection, assessing the broader condition of the vehicle and providing the buyer with information to help them make an informed purchasing decision.
After all, our job isn't to sell you the vehicle.
Our job is to help you understand what you're buying.

EV battery testing might be new to the headlines. It isn't new to us.
We're genuinely pleased to see EV battery health receiving greater attention in South Australia.
The more consumers understand the importance of independently checking battery condition when buying a used EV, the better informed the second-hand EV market becomes.
RAA joining the AVILOO network helps bring that conversation into the mainstream.
AIVI has simply had a bit of a head start.
We began assessing EV batteries almost three years ago and became South Australia's first AVILOO testing provider when the technology entered the Australian market.
We've been learning about these batteries, testing vehicles and helping South Australians understand the EVs they're considering buying since well before EV battery health testing started making the news.
So, welcome to the party, RAA. We've been leading the charge for a while — and we're glad to see EV battery health finally getting the attention it deserves.
